Media Release (17 January 2008)

Monash University Leading the Way in Education

Monash University Gippsland is happy to announce a positive contribution to the numbers of available tertiary places to prospective students, at a time when shortages nationally and regionally is a concern.

The campus is up 21% on the number of offers made in comparison to 2007.

The most popular areas are Nursing, Education, with consistent strength in areas such as Humanities, Art and Design and Business.

The campus is also delighted to report that there is an increasing interest specifically in Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Applied Sciences, which are especially tailored to the Gippsland regional environment.

Associate Professor Harry Ballis believes “more local students are capitalising on an opportunity to enrol in programs that immediately produce jobs locally”.

The campus is anticipating a solid intake of students for the 2008 academic year from areas of Victoria and interstate. More students are choosing the local campus, as the costs of city living are a prohibiting factor for many families. By being able to live and study locally, more students are choosing to study at the regional University.

With the Graduate Medical Program commencing with a full intake in 2008, Monash University Gippsland is establishing itself as a destination of choice by many local students seeking higher education.

With programs specific to Gippsland such as the Co-operate Education Program and the Diploma of Tertiary Studies (DoTS), the campus is proving attractive for regional students, with many places still available in these programs for students interested in studying at the Gippsland campus.

Associate Professor Ballis wants to express his thanks to the “many organisations and individuals in the community that have played an important role in shaping the campus to enhance its relevance to local communities”.
