Medical school students commence at Gippsland
The first cohort of medicine students at Monash University Gippsland’s Medical School commenced this week, ready to start their new year.
A traditional smoking ceremony was performed for the students, with the theme, “Welcome to the Country” to cleanse, followed by a series of sessions and tours to familiarise the future doctors with the University and the course in general. The ceremony focused on welcoming the students to the region, and to cleanse them symbolically of any negativity in their bodies.
All students then attended a series of sessions and tours to familiarise the future doctors with the University and the course in general.
They were then introduced to the members of the Student Union, who explained the many different roles that there are, and how they can best accommodate these new students into the University lifestyle.
Throughout the week, the students took part in classes which show the different aspects that the post graduate medicine course has to offer. Tutorials and lectures about the course and also hands-on activities such as Level 2 First Aid were included in the itinerary.
Professor Chris Browne, Dean of the Gippsland Medical School said that having these new students here at Gippsland “will vastly help the shortage of rural doctors, in both this region, and other areas of Australia. They are the ambassadors of this campus, in the public and private health services and throughout the whole region”.
We also encourage the new students to engage with the local community,” he said “this is to ensure they get the maximum benefit from being here in Gippsland”.
Professor Browne said that the facilities at the Gippsland campus have been designed and constructed to provide the best possible learning environment for the students. Featuring observation and consultation rooms, and wards, the Medical School is equipped with all the necessary facilities for the students, who are well on their way to being successful regional doctors.
