New Leader At Monash Gippsland Announced

Monash University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Richard Larkins has announced the Pro Vice-Chancellor to head up the University’s Gippsland campus.

She is Professor Helen Bartlett, who will start in the role on Monday, 4 August 2008.

Professor Larkins said the University was fortunate to have secured such an outstanding appointee.

“Professor Bartlett comes to Monash with an outstanding record of academic leadership and management,” Professor Larkins said.

“She is currently Professor and Foundation Director of the Australasian Centre on Ageing at the University of Queensland. She has a strong background in international higher education management, including five years as Director, Oxford Centre for Health Care Research and Development and two years as Co-Director, Oxford Dementia Centre.

“It is an exciting time for the Gippsland Campus, with the start this year of a new Graduate Medicine degree and strong interest in other course offerings from students and the community.

“Professor Bartlett will continue to build the profile and reputation of the campus within the region and across Australia.”

Professor Bartlett graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in nursing studies from Northumbria University. She obtained registration as a Health Visitor and qualifications in health education and further education teaching.

She has a Master of Science, in public policy studies, and a doctorate in Philosophy, both from the University of Bath.

Professor Bartlett’s research interests are in health and community care, particularly in relation to ageing. Her research has attracted substantial funding and has involved collaboration across the disciplines. She has published extensively in these areas.

Professor Bartlett is active in community engagement and experienced in partnership development. She is a member of professional associations, journal editorial boards, government and other advisory committees.

Professor Larkins also paid tribute to the magnificent contribution being made by acting Pro Vice-Chancellor (Gippsland). Associate Professor Harry Ballis. Associate Professor Ballis will remain in the role until the commencement of Professor Bartlett later this year and will then return to his role as Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor.
