Media Release (19 February 2008)Tutoring ProgramMonash University Gippsland students are getting back to their VCE roots, as tutors to students studying at local high schools. Through the Schools Access Monash (SAM) Program, three schools in the Gippsland region are provided with a wide range of activities to increase students’ awareness of universities and courses available, and to help students reach their academic potential. A major part of the program is tutoring students in Year 12 to achieve in their VCE Studies. There are around 100 tutors from all Monash campuses in the SAM program, which targets a select group of ten schools in different regions of Victoria. A group of Monash students recently undertook a 2 hour training session on “How to be a Good tutor” at the Monash Gippsland Campus. Of these students, there are 13 from Gippsland who will be returning to local high schools. Most are graduates of regional schools, including Kurnai College, Lavalla Catholic College, St Pauls Anglican Grammar, Chairo Christian College, Catholic College Sale, Luther College, Sale College, Trafalgar High and Lowanna College The Monash student tutors will be helping school students in selected VCE units including Chemistry, Biology, Psychology, and more. By tutoring the students, it is hoped that the Monash students will engage the high school students about educational possibilities, and encourage them to explore further study opportunities.
