Secondary Maths

The project

The mathematics component of the Gippsland Access and Participation (GAP) project aims to support teachers of secondary mathematics in Gippsland, particularly those teaching in Years 7-10.

We will produce printed and online support materials, and work with teachers in their schools.

Challenges

It is widely recognised that Australia has some teachers in secondary schools who lack confidence in teaching mathematics. Many find themselves “shifted” across into mathematics from their own subject areas.

In Gippsland, many teachers are isolated and face many extra challenges in obtaining useful professional development because they are far from regional centres. That is why online tutorial materials and printed topic guides will be used to underpin our support for teachers in this project.

Teachers in other States

We will have the ability to complement support materials available to mathematics teachers in every State.

The GAP project coincides with the first stages of development of a new National Curriculum in Mathematics, which will guide and assist our work.
