Science and Engineering Week 2008

In August 2008, the School of Applied Sciences and Engineering took the opportunity to celebrate National Science and Engineering Week with the following activities:

Nanotechnology Workshop

Nanotechnology Victoria (NanoVic) and the School of Applied Sciences and Engineering jointly offered a free two hour workshop to over 90 local Year 11 secondary school students.

Nanotechnology is technology distinguished primarily by the scale at which it acts: one billionth of a metre, or one ten-thousandth the width of a human hair. In the simplest terms, nanotechnology is engineering at the atomic or molecular scale. It is a fast developing technological revolution – encompassing all scientific disciplines including physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, materials science and engineering – which has significant potential benefit to all industries.

Additional information and photos of this workshop can be found on the NanoVic website.

SCINEMA Film Festival

The SCINEMA film festival toured to over 150 towns and cities for National Science Week in 2008, including three screenings by the School of Applied Sciences and Engineering at Monash University Gippsland Campus. Each session catered to a different body of audience, including a lunchtime film on ‘Sustainability’ for Monash students and staff, a day time session of three short ‘Animal Kingdom’ films for 85 primary school children from four local schools, and an evening session on ‘The Human Brain’ which was open to the general public.

Additional information about the Film festival can be found at the SCINEMA08.
