History of the School

c 1945
Diploma of Applied Chemistry first taught at Yallourn Technical College (YTC) - first awarded in 1946.
1968
Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education established, based on tertiary division of YTC.
c 1970
Dr Brenton Groves appointed first Dean of the School of Applied Science, based on the Newborough campus.
1971
Introduction of Mathematics major sequence for Diploma of General Studies in the Social Sciences.
1974
Bachelor of Applied Sciences (multidisciplinary) introduced as award of Victorian Institute of Colleges (VIC) - majors in Applied Chemistry and Mathematics.
1975
BAppSc first offered in external study mode (off campus learning).
1976
New Applied Sciences facility (now building 2W) opened on Churchill campus.
1978
Physical Science (Applied Physics) major introduced in BAppSc.
1979
Mathematics discipline transfers to School of Applied Sciences from School of Business and General Studies.
Mr Neil Terrill appointed Dean of Engineering and Applied Science.
1981
School of Applied Sciences established (as a separate entity from Engineering) with Barry Dunstan as Head.
1982
Operations Research and Computing Methods major introduced in BAppSc.
1984
Two-year Associate Diploma in Computing introduced.
Final year of intake to Dip.App.Chem.
Opening of Victorian Brown Coal Corporation research facility on campus.
1985
Applied Biology (Biochemistry and Microbiology) major introduced in BAppSc.
1986
New laboratories for Bioscience, Microbiology and Physical Sciences opened at Gippsland campus at Churchill.
Diploma of Applied Sciences (Nursing) commenced within School of Applied Science.
1988
Responsibility for Nursing courses transferred to new School of Health Sciences.
Reaccreditation of BAppSc, now providing majors in Applied Biology, Applied Chemistry, Mathematics, Operations Research and Information Management, and Physical Science.
1990
GIAE becomes Monash University College Gippsland (on 1st July).
Double degree in Science and Business introduced.
1993
Transition to Monash University Gippsland campus (on 1st January).
1995
Associate Professor Martin A Hooper appointed Head of School of Applied Science.
Responsibility for computing discipline transferred to new Gippsland School of Computing and Information Technology as part of Faculty of Information Technology.
Psychology section of School of Humanities and Social Sciences joins Applied Science, but retains formal links with Department of Psychology.
1996
Science related activities at Peninsula join the School of Applied Science.
1997
First Ph.D. theses completed in School of Applied Sciences are successfully submitted.
Double awards in science (with Casey Institute of TAFE) introduced on Berwick campus.
New double degrees of science with Arts (communication), Arts (journalism) and Computing introduced.
New double degree of BAppSc/BA(Soc.Sci) introduced on Peninsula campus.
1998
Name change from School of Applied Sciences to Gippsland School of Applied Sciences.
Transition to BSc award from BAppSc.
2000
Diploma in Wine Technology and Marketing introduced on Peninsula campus, jointly with David Syme School of Business.
2001
Professor Ron Dickson appointed Head of School of Applied Sciences.
2002
Professor Sam Adeloju appointed Head of School of Applied Sciences and Professor of Chemical and Environmental Sciences from December.
New Applied Sciences research facility in building 2W opened in December.
2003
New postgraduate research facility building 3W opened mid-year.
The School of Applied Sciences and School of Engineering merge to become the School of Applied Sciences and Engineering
