Ray joined Monash University in 1992, after ,28 years as a professional
engineer in power generation. He had many technical and managerial
achievements in power stations and central specialist units in Australia.
This included two years on a scholarship in the UK power industry
and a year interstate improving the thermal efficiency of a steam
power station. Ray had parallel involvement in condition monitoring/predictive
maintenance development and application, resulting in advanced vibration
analysis techniques in Victoria's power stations and open cut mines.
Ray received the Collacott Prize three times from the Institution
of Diagnostic Engineers, and was awarded the 2004 Sir George Julius
Medal by Engineers Australia for the best publication in the field
of mechanical engineering. In 2008, he graduated MEngSc(Research)
with a thesis based on his publications.
Ray has consulted and presented many short courses in plant performance
and predictive maintenance/condition monitoring across Australia
and in other countries. He is a frequent presenter at technical conferences
in Australia and overseas, has written two books and many papers
and is often invited to speak at company and industry events. Many
of his papers have also appeared in technical magazines and websites
and in other books. His 6+ years service in the Royal Australian
Engineers (CMF) was recognised in 2007 with the Australian Defence
Medal.
Teaching Commitments
Ray teaches postgraduate units, with some undergraduate involvement.
Since 1996, he has been Co-ordinator of the Monash programs in maintenance
management and reliability engineering, offered by off campus learning
(in North America in association with the University of Tennessee).
Each year, he advises for several of the postgraduate student projects.
Ray is the unit advisor for the following units:
Research Interests
Ray researches applications of condition monitoring, as related
to business results in optimising maintenance, and with a particular
interest in performance analysis and its benefits in improving energy
efficiency.
