Associate Professor Yousef Ibrahim is the Founding Director of Gippsland Regional Automation Centre (GRACe) that was established in 2005.

Associate Professor Yousef Ibrahim, was also the initiator and founder of Monash’s Mechatronics undergraduate program (1997) that is currently offered through Monash University Clayton and Kula Lampur campuses.

In addition, he established the Graduate Certificate in reliability Engineering (1992) and the Masters Program in Maintenance and Reliability Engineering in 1999.

Associate Professor Ibrahim’s research activities are mainly in the area of Industrial Automation and Robotics and in the area of Life Cycle and Asset Management. He is also the General Chair of the IEEE International Conference on Industrial Technology (ICIT), Feb. 2009.

Academic Initiatives

  • In 2004 Associate Professor Yousef Ibrahim (in collaboration with Gippsland regional industries) won a major grant to the value of $1 Million to help in the sustainability of regional industry through industrial automation. Hence, he founded the “Gippsland Regional Automation Centre (GRACe)”. The first project on the Automation of Fish Sorting has been successfully completed (provisionally patented).
  • Associate Proferssor Yousef Ibrahim is also the initiator and founder of Monash’s "Mechatronics Undergraduate Program" (1997). This degree is currently offered through Monash’s campuses at Clayton ( Melbourne) and Kuala Lumpur ( Malaysia).
  • Founded the Master degree program of “Maintenance and Reliability Engineering” in 1999. This program is concurrently offered in Australia and in USA (through a special agreement with University of Tennessee, Knoxville), with over 90 graduates so far.
  • Established the “Graduate Certificate in Reliability Engineering”, launched in 1992 and still going strong by Distance Education.
  • Founder of the Industrial Robotics Unit and Laboratory in 1988.
  • Project-based learning in Mechatronics and Robotics which has led to a strong link with industry. Examples of real-life industry projects are:
    • Robotisation of palletising process, National Foods, Morwell.
    • Automation of paper-ream labelling, Australian Paper, Maryvale Plant.
    • Robotisation of basic construction components, DuraTek Construction Pty. Ltd., Victoria.
    • Replacement of a Dedicated Palletiser with a Robotic System, Australian Paper, Traralgon.
    • Robotisation of Milk Sampling, Dairy Research Centre, Victoria.
