Why do Honours?
The Honours year is a challenging and rewarding experience! It provides
an opportunity for you to extend and apply the knowledge that you have
gained during the first three years of your undergraduate program as
you learn to design and carry out your own research. You will be able
to share your experiences with other Honours and postgraduate students
in the School.
It’s useful!
As an Honours graduate, you will be recognized as a research scientist,
with skills in experimental design, data collection and analysis and
communication of scientific concepts. These skills are highly valued
by employers, and an Honours degree is a pre-requisite for further
studies at Masters or PhD level.
It has financial benefits!
As an Honours graduate, you will have an advantage when competing for
jobs with applicants who have a three-year pass degree. Starting salaries
for Honours graduates are generally higher. Also, because the Honours
year is a part of your Undergraduate degree, it may be completed under
HECS funding.
It’s a great adventure!
You’ll spend a year finding out about yourself and whether you are suited
to a career in research. During your Honours year, you become an integral
part of the research team in the School as you make the transition from “student” to “scientist”.
