Research and development (R&D) is my preferred career path because I love to work in a challenging environment in an area that helps to improve life and health.
I am with a group that oversees the isolation of antibiotic-producing soil bacteria indigenous to Malaysia’s rainforests. I access tropical forests
frequently to collect soil and medicinal plant samples. Morphological characterisation of soil microbes is done for identification purposes. I am also involved
in the fermentation of bacteria for chemical extraction and analysis.
The work can be rewarding such as when we discovered a rare actinomycetes producing interesting metabolites. We aim to discover ideas and inventions to be
patented. Our research solves many important problems as well as providing new technologies to our clients. It’s a pleasure to work with world class researchers
and acquire new skills.
Life at Gippsland was a truly memorable experience. The ambient environment is very conducive for both studying and relaxing. Meeting people from different parts
of the globe broadened my views and taught me to see things optimistically too.
The wide range of subjects to choose from in the course to gave us a good understanding and broader prospects for future employment.
